Shri Jishnu Dev Varma serves as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra, bringing to the office decades of distinguished service in governance, administration, and public life. A scion of the historic Manikya Dynasty of Tripura — one of India’s most ancient ruling lineages spanning over fourteen centuries — he embodies a rare confluence of royal heritage, democratic commitment, and cultural scholarship.
His career in public service began in the early 1990s with the Bharatiya Janata Party, where he rose to serve as National General Secretary. As Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023, he held critical portfolios including Finance, Power, Rural Development, and Science & Technology, driving transformative initiatives in renewable energy, tribal welfare, and sustainable development.
Beyond politics, Shri Dev Varma is a published author of six books, a poet of distinction writing in both Bengali and English, and a visual artist whose works grace temples, tourist destinations, and public spaces across India. Sworn in on March 10, 2026, as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Jishnu Dev Varma became the first resident of Tripura to hold the gubernatorial office of any Indian state. In this constitutional capacity, he serves as the Chancellor of all State Public Universities and has prioritised accountability in higher education, directing quarterly performance reports from all Vice-Chancellors.
Prior to Maharashtra, he served as the Governor of Telangana from July 2024 to March 2026, where he articulated the ambitious ‘Telangana Rising 2047’ vision — a comprehensive roadmap positioning the state as a three-trillion-dollar economy.
